Speech, Hearing, and Balance Institute, Inc. (SHBII) is a non-profit organization created from the passion and vision to provide services to low-income individuals who have speech, hearing, and balance special needs within the United States (US) and abroad.   Volunteer trips were organized in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua since July 2008.  President and founder, Dr. Christina Boover Lawrence, volunteered in many of the above areas where she experienced overwhelming needs related to speech, language, hearing, and balance services. As a result, a dream to unite other professionals to meet the needs of those less fortunate was realized.

Our hope is to raise awareness of the ill effects of hearing loss and reduced language skills.  We provide training and workshops to sustain novice programs targeting such needs.  We plan to expand our efforts wherever there are needs including the Navajo Reservation, New Orleans, or other high need areas in the US as well as the international community.  We thank the generosity of our financial contributors, coworkers, and partners who have supported SHBII.  We also thank those persons who are contributing data and research so that we can expand our knowledge base and present clinical trials for study.

Dr. Lawrence currently works on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona, US recognizing the need for more quality services in the area.  To contribute to funding, SHBII developed an online store which showcases unique jewelry and Navajo rugs made by local resources of the Navajo Reservation.  SHBII is currently searching for other ways in which low-income communities can contribute their own resources in order to support and sustain themselves. This will in turn empower these communities.  SHBII's guiding principal is to work "with" low-income populations who have special needs not "for" these populations.  Empowerment is the key to sustainability.

Dr. Lawrence is a native to New Orleans, LA where the need for affordable healthcare for poverty stricken areas are in demand, especially after the advent of hurricane Katrina.  If you would like to donate to our cause or learn how you can volunteer, please explore this website in its entirety. SHBII is dedicated to making a difference in the world.  We hope to impress upon others the spirit of giving so that others may "pay-it forward".  Hopefully, this will create a movement in healthcare that is both high-quality and generous.
